Why China is putting robots in nursing homes
China has more than 230 million senior citizens. To keep them company, it’s encouraging nursing homes to buy companionship robots.
Long Shan Nursing Home in Chongqing is one of a few dozen early testing sites for caregiving robots in China. It’s been experimenting with them since August 2016. As fewer Chinese are able to care for their aging parents, the number of retirement homes nationwide is mushrooming. And since China can’t rely on the one-child generation to care for its large and growing elderly population, it needs another solution.
